THE ORIGIN OF EASTER and DOES IT EVEN MATTER?

Does it really matter how things started?  Would it really change how they have become, if we knew how they started?  Does it take away from the value and the joy we embrace?

So many questions.  Now with access to information via the internet, nothing is secret anymore. You are  only invited into a discovery of what is there and then you have the freedom to believe it or not.

Easter... what is is about?  Is it about Jesus, an egg carrying bunny rabbit or a pagan goddess?  I guess that depends on who is doing the discovering.  We live in a world now where so many things are open to interpretation... finally!  There is no one way to process the journey of life, and I for one am thankful for the awareness that there are other people interpreting things different from how I am interpreting them.

My question today is how important is history and origin to the current existence of the celebration of Easter?  I think it would have derailed me as a child if I had known about the story of Ashtoreth and how she played into the origins of Easter.  But as an adult on a skeptical journey, I'm not as threatened by that discovery.  I found an article on the internet if anyone is interested in an Easter history lesson.  I am sure a quick Google search will uncover other references that can bring this secret to some light.

 EASTER 101

It is not my desire today to change what we have today.  I think so many people have been enriched by the celebration of Easter whether it is about Jesus or the Easter Bunny.  Maybe the beginnings don't matter now.  Maybe  some would still be shocked even in 2022 about the origins of Easter and just how NOT Christian they are.  Maybe understanding the insignificance of Christianity in the origin of the holiday, would help to add some grace in the mix of what we now call Easter.  Maybe then there would be room for Jesus and the Bunny at the Easter festivities.  Much like at Christmas there is room for Jesus and Santa Claus.

Maybe sharing space in this world is what it is all about.  I hope we can all find grace to share space with others.    Even if we find ourselves sharing that space with Ashtoreth.
